While resilience is often thought of as bouncing back or having the mental toughness to endure rough times, it actually encompasses much more.
In a workplace setting, resilience is more accurately defined as:
“An individual, leader or team's capacity to manage the everyday stress of work and remain healthy, rebound and learn from unexpected setbacks and prepare for future challenges proactively.”
The lack of resiliency carries high costs and the stats are staggering:
- A 2023 survey by Robert Walters found that 3 in 5 Canadian employees experienced increased workplace stress compared to the previous year, due to factors like heavy workloads, job instability, and lack of employer support.
- Chronic workplace stress can cause serious health issues, including anxiety, depression, heart disease, and fatigue. In the U.S., highly stressed employees have healthcare costs nearly 50% higher than less stressed workers, contributing to $190 billion in annual stress-related expenses.
- Absenteeism costs U.S. employers about $225.8 billion per year, averaging $1,685 per employee.
- The World Health Organization estimates that depression and anxiety lead to a global loss of 12 billion workdays annually, costing $1 trillion in productivity.
